The Scot promised Millers fans he would don his beach attire if they guaranteed their safety in the second tier, an achievement they made sure of by beating Reading on Tuesday, despite a three-point deduction from the Football League for fielding an ineligible player.

The public clamour for Evans, who delivered back-to-back promotions to the club before delivering survival, to go through with his pledge was huge, with over 10,000 tweets posted with the #sombreroforsteve hashtag.

The 52-year-old changed into a suit for the game as Leeds held a minute’s applause for fans who have died throughout the season.
