A STREET light has finally been replaced in a Sheffield neighbourhood – almost eight months after the problem was first reported.

Residents of Nicholson Road, Heeley, reported the missing street light to Sheffield Council in April, after it was removed from a nearby walkway, known as ‘the 46 steps’, which connects the street to Shirebrook Road.

When it had not been reinstated as promised, a petition signed by 36 people demanding its return was presented to the members of the council’s South community assembly in October.

Coun Jack Scott apologised for the delay and said the light would be replaced the next week – but residents say it was not put back until January.

They complained the alleyway was unsafe in the dark or wet without the light and it was overgrown as well as covered in graffiti.

Recruitment consultant James Cameron, of Nicholson Road, said: “It’s a good idea to have a street light in a dark alley – it’s just common sense”

Liberal Democrat activist Richard Shaw, also of Nicholson Road, raised the problem with the council in April and organised the petition.

The council initially said replacement of the light had been put on hold due to a review of Sheffield’s street lighting as part of the £2 billion Streets Ahead scheme to resurface all roads and pavements and replace lampposts.

Mr Shaw said: “People didn’t want to use the steps in the dark and would rather make lengthy detours to avoid using them.

“The steps are convenient and people couldn’t understand why the street light had been removed.”

Coun Scott said: “I’ll make sure we find out why it took so long. However, I’m glad the residents are happy now.”
