A PACKAGE of improvements to bus services in Sheffield is being firmed up in the light of an additional £18.3m Government grant that was announced this week.

Transport managers are aiming to smooth the running of buses into the city centre from places such as Gleadless, Meadowhead, Heeley Bottom, the Parkway and the north of Sheffield.

Highways improvement are planned for Ecclesall Road, along with the introduction of technology to better control traffic signals and give priority to buses.

The Department for Transport grant, announced by Transport Minister Norman Baker, combines money already paid directly to bus operators with new funding, and follows the launch last October of the Sheffield Bus Partnership, which brings together South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, Sheffield City Council and operators First, Stagecoach and Sheffield Community Transport.

SYPTE Director of Customer Experience David Young said it was “significant further investment, especially during these tough economic times.

“An effective bus network is an essential part of a vibrant economy and the Better Bus Area grant will help get transport moving more efficiently on key corridors in Sheffield, support employment and improve air quality for everyone.”
