WORK is due to start later this year on a £40m redevelopment of Sheffield Children’s Hospital after it was given the all-clear this week by councillors.

Planning permission was granted on Monday for a three and four-storey extension, which will create a new main entrance off Clarkson Street along with a new out-patients department, 72 en-suite rooms.

A basement car park, with a new system of traffic going in and out, is designed to ease long-running congestion problems.

Project manager John Petty said after the council verdict: “We’ll now continue with work on the design and we hope to start on the work by early-to-mid summer.”

It is hoped that the new wing will be open within two years.

The designs were chosen after an architectural competition won by London-based Avanti Architects.

A £20m ‘Make It Better’ appeal aims to help pay for the new wing, with the remaining £20m due to come from government and private sources.

Health service managers say the development will create a “world class” environment for patients, staff and visitors.

Council officers praised the “sensitive” design that they said fitted in with the historic buildings that will remain and the neighbouring conservation area.

Other features include a garden for patients and visitors above the car park, and a circular play tower from floor to ceiling in the main reception.
