Allotment rent rise protest

An online petition is opposing further rises in council allotment rents to £160 a year in Sheffield.

Dan Bilton, chairman of Walkley Bank Allotment Society, said: “The charge has always gone up gradually but in the past three years it’s gone up by more than 100%.” Sheffield will be one of the most expensive places in the country for allotments, he said.

The council blames Government cuts, but says people on lower incomes will pay less.
