The Roman Catholic of Hallam has a new bishop following the installation of the Rt Rev Ralph Heskett at a ceremony at St Marie’s Cathedral in Norfolk Row in Sheffield city centre.

Representatives of parishes across the region, civic dignitaries and community leaders watched as he formally succeeded Bishop John Rawsthorne, who has retired after 17 years. Bishop Ralph, aged 61, who was born in Sunderland, moves to Hallam after four years as the Bishop of Gibraltar. He said: “It was a bit of a surprise for me, and obviously living in Gibraltar there has been and will continue to be difficulties for a little while, but I am looking forward to what lays ahead.”
