A STUDENT who runs a charity stall at his Sheffield school – despite being blind – has been nominated for an award.

Tapton student Tahir Hussein, aged 16, was put forward for next month’s High Sheriff of South Yorkshire awards for his efforts on behalf of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in North Anston.

So far he has collected more than £1,000 by running the monthly stall during lunchtime.

Tahir, of Pitsmoor, who lost his sight at the age of five because of a rare genetic condition, and who also has moderate hearing loss, said: “It makes me feel very happy to be nominated.”

He chose Bluebell Wood because it had helped another visually impaired student at Tapton.

Liz Williams, teacher of the visually impaired, who nominated Tahir, said: “When running the stall he has memorised all the stock prices off by heart and manages the money with very little guidance.

“He is an inspiration and has overcome his difficulties - the fact he is totally blind and has a hearing impairment - to help others.”
