A MAN arrested by police after he prompted a 12-hour stand-off by pouring boiling water from his flat onto the street in Fulwood has been admitted to hospital for a mental health assessment.

Officers were called to Brooklands Avenue last Saturday morning after reports that a man in premises above the Rhythm and Booze store was pouring water onto the street and hurling crockery.

A 47-year-old local man was arrested 12 hours later, after extensive negotiations and the cordoning off of the road.

David Curzon, manager of nearby GT News, said: “The police negotiated with him for hours. He was shouting and screaming at his window all day, although I’m not sure what about.

“Luckily nobody was hurt as far as we can tell, but it took the police a long time to calm him down.”

One nearby resident, who declined to be named, said: “There was such a lot of activity - police vans and cars and so many officers everywhere. We couldn’t believe how long it went on and we have no idea what triggered it or what he wanted, but the police seemed to be stuck in a waiting game with him.”

Police thanked local residents for their patience.
