THE brother of a former Sheffield Hallam University student who died in a road crash is preparing to run a 10k race in the city in his memory next month.

Racing cyclist Mathew Hook was 28 when he was killed in a collision with a motorcyclist on the Dronfield to Baslow Road in September, 2011. The other rider also died.

Mathew, who graduated in business studies in 2004, was a fitness enthusiast who competed in competitions and regularly raised money for Oxfam.

Now his brother, Nathan, is preparing to run the Sheffield Varsity 10k on Sunday, March 10 in aid of the same charity.

“My brother had a love for sport and ran marathons across the UK at ridiculously fast paces,” said Nathan. “In 2009, he completed the London Marathon in three hours and seven minutes and then in 2011 he was training for an Iron Man race, which included cycling.

“As part of his training he often cycled from his home in Sheffield to his birth home in Ripley, Derbyshire, and back again.”

Nathan, aged 26, who lives in Nottinghamshire, raised £2,000 by taking part in the race last year. “He used to ask me when I was going to do a marathon, or at least a 10k run with him next, but I would always keep putting it off. After his passing I was determined to run it for him. I could hear him willing me on as I entered the finishing straight to record 49 minutes.”

The Sheffield Varisty 10k race starts at Don Valley Stadium at 10.30am and involves students and staff from both city universities.
