Community test as housing plans unveiled for school site

Long-running proposals for housing on the site of a former Sheffield secondary school have been firmed up.

After years of discussion over the future of land where Abbeydale Grange used to stand, community representatives are digesting a scheme for 53 houses and apartments.

It is a sensitive location - next to ancient woodland - and local people are keen to ensure that plenty of green space remains after development.

“We are going to work very hard to make sure we have got some superb amenities as well as making sure the planning application doesn’t close off any opportunities for future generations,” said Ted Gunby, who chairs Carter Knowle and Millhouses Community Group.

The school closed in 2011, and it was always envisaged that the site, along with that of the nearby Bannerdale Centre, would be allocated for housing.

Now the council has submitted an outline application for 47 two, three, four and five bed houses and six two bed apartments.

“Market research for this project clearly identified the need for larger family houses,” says the council.

It believes it is striking a balance between developing the land at the corner of Abbeydale Road and Hastings Road and protecting the environment, especially ancient woodland, Spring Wood.

Initially, up to 120 homes were envisaged.

Mr Gunby said: “We feel we really need to dig in and look at the application in detail before we respond. It is crucially important that the council raises a significant amount of money. We understand that. But I don’t think we can take a short term view on such a fantastic asset to the city.”
