Cost of fire service to rise by 1.98%

COUNCIL tax payers in South Yorkshire will pay slightly more for their fire service over the next year.

The fire authority has agreed to increase its part of the overall council tax bill - the precept - by 1.98%, meaning many residents will pay an extra £1.24 in 2013/14, up to £63.78. A rise of 2% would have required a referendum.

The authority faces Government budget cuts of £10m by 2015.

Chief Fire Officer Jamie Courtney said: “It is vital that we do as much as possible to protect our frontline services, and since 2010 we have significantly reduced management, administration and back office costs.”
