Darwin's Evolution as a musical melody

The eminent British biologist, Denis Noble visited the University of Sheffield this week to give a talk accompanied by music, by classical guitarist Christoph Denoth, on Darwin and his theory of Natural Selection.

As the last talk in the Arts-Science Encounters programme, Denis Noble, from Oxford University and Christoph Denoth, an international award-winning classical guitarist, entertained the audience by blending music and voice in their talk about Darwin.

Christoph played pieces from Villa-Lobes and Fernando Sor, while Denis Noble talked and played pieces from Bach Invention Number 8.

Using music and musical metaphors to look at Darwin and some of the excesses of neo-Darwinism, both Denis Noble and Christoph Denoth explored the idea of Natural Selection, with Evolution playing the part of the 'grand composer.'

Denis Noble commented: "It was great to lecture and perform in this magnificent setting in the bicentary year of Charles Darwin."
