Deadline looms for Sheffield businesses to decide whether to help pay for flood defences

NEWS: News.

NEWS: News.

The deadline for businesses to vote on whether they want flood defences installed in the Lower Don Valley area of Sheffield is drawing near.

More than 250 companies affected by the plans have until 5pm on Friday, December 13, to return their ballot papers and give their backing to the proposals, which cover nearly 40 interventions along the 8km stretch of the River Don, between Nursery Street and Blackburn Brook.

The £8.1 million scheme is reliant on businesses in the Lower Don Valley agreeing to contribute £1.4 million towards the cost of the defences.

Businesses would make a payment calculated on their rateable value over a fixed period of five years to cover part of the building cost and ensure the river channel is properly maintained and kept clear.

Small companies with a rateable value less than £12,000 will be excluded from paying towards the project.
