At the age of 91, Dennis Whinfrey is often complimented on his smart appearance - right down to his shoes.

And he certainly takes pride in his footwear.

He bought the brown leather lace-ups 25 years ago from Peter’s shoe shop in the old hole-in-the-road subway, Castle Square - and has had them reheeled every six months at the shop, which is now in nearby High Street.

“They polish up well and I try to look after them,” said Dennis, of Wybourn, whose daily attire is a double-breasted blazer, waistcoat, shirt and tie. “I always get complimented on them. They may be 25 years old but I still take care of them.”

He bought the Loakes shoes for £60, a lot of money even then.

Shop owner Peter Bullock was amazed the shoes were still going strong after such a long time. “They must be the most repaired shoes in the country,” he said.
