Derby day fans urged to use public transport
News: Local, national and international news 24-hours a day.
FOOTBALL fans travelling to Hillsborough for the derby tomorrow are being urged to use public transport to try to prevent traffic congestion in the city.
The match between Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, is expected to attract a crowd of 34,000.
South Yorkshire Police are advising fans to allow plenty of time for their journey to the ground and to get there early for the ticket-only game at 1pm.
Nobody thought to be under the influence of drink or drugs will be allowed into the ground.
A team of 350 police officers will be on duty, monitoring fans before, during and after the game.
Metal crowd control barriers will be used outside to keep fans apart.
Supt Simon Verrall, responsible for policing the derby, said: “We want the game to showcase the city, and we want everyone who is attending the game to have an enjoyable time in support of the teams.”

Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 09:47 AMWednesday used to get 65K on many occasions in the 1950's, when people didn't have cars. The tram network was much better than this so called super tram. Why can't supporters travel on the train into Wadsley bridge station like they used to be able to. P.S. I thought the crowd was 37K this weekend, less 2K because of stupid officialdom.

Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 09:26 AMI take it that someione has mentioned this to the Transport people As it is Sunday will there be enough buses to cope with over 30k people in such a short time I doubt it very much IN any case why should there be congestion in the City it is a weekend people are not going to or coming back from work
