The gates to Doncaster’s Elmfield Park have been re-opened – but for some it will never be the same.

As police patrols provided reassurance, a shrine to the memory of murder victim Casey Kearney, aged 13 was growing by the minute at the old fountain in the middle of the path leading from Bennetthorpe to Chequer Road.

Yesterday was the first day the public had been let back into the park since it became a crime scene on Tuesday afternoon.

Hundreds of candles have been lit as a tribute to Case at the stone monument which is covered in flowers and toys. A steady stream of people approached the fountain to pay their respects.

But only a few mums with children were using the play area 100 yards away, near to where Casey collapsed from a stab wound.

Three of her best friends from The McAuley Catholic High School visited the shrine and lit candles and placed flowers and a toy duck alongside the other tokens.

Alisha Leggott, said: “Casey was the best person ever. We were all like sisters. We’ll be coming back here to think about her.”

Everyone entering the park was stopped by a police officer who asked if they had been there on Valentine’s Day.

Detectives are still seeking information about the events in or near the park. Det Supt Terry Mann said: “We’ve been encouraged by the response, but we are still appealing for more witnesses.”

Anyone with information should call 01709 443 510 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

n Hannah Bonser, aged 26, of Cusworth House, St James Street (pictured) has been remanded in custody by Doncaster magistrates charged with murder and possession of a bladed articles.
