Forge Press Editor awarded Chancellor's Medal
The University of Sheffield has awarded this year's Chancellor's Medal to a student who has transformed the University student newspaper with his editorship. Ciaran Jones, who will graduate this year with a degree in English Language and Literature, will receive the prize in acknowledgement of his outstanding work with Forge Press.
Ciaran, 20, originally from Northampton, started at the University in 2006, and during his 3 years in the city, has proved remarkable with his ability to work the equivalent of a full time job at the paper, whilst still attaining strong academic results and retaining a vibrant and balanced social life.
The Chancellor's Medal is made in recognition of the outstanding attainment of an individual student in academic or sporting activities or in other personal achievements.
Ciaran's initial involvement with the paper was as a writer. He then moved on to hold the position of music editor during his first and second years at University and then became Editor of the paper in the Easter of 2008, finishing during the Easter of 2009.
Throughout his time as Editor, the paper has grown to provide a strong news content, with compelling features, interviews and reviews with high profile people such as; David Lammy, Sean Bean, Lee Child and Kate Adie.
Ciaran has changed the perception of the paper, so now people regard it as an established, trustworthy and reputable publication based on community journalism. He has ensured that the paper acts as a journalistic watchdog to the Union's elected representatives and is not afraid of controversy
Ciaran said: "It is a real privilege and honour to win the medal. But I have to mention that it is not just down to me, I have to thank all the people involved with the student media, especially Rob Ellerington and the editorial team at Forge Press, who have been outstanding and made my job a lot easier."
Professor Keith Burnett, Vice-Chancellor of the University, said: "Ciaran has made an outstanding contribution to Forge Press, and he should be very proud of his achievement. I am delighted to be presenting Ciaran with this award and wish him every success in his future career."
