Despite a recent spate of muggings in Firth Park, residents are speaking out about all the positive things that are happening.

All this week there has been an archaeological dig in the park, organised by the University of Sheffield.

Joined by pupils from Firth Park Academy and Longley Park Sixth Form College, the dig uncovered the remains of the Victorian bandstand which used to stand in the park.

Katherine Fennely, of the university, said: “It’s been a really successful dig, we’ve uncovered lots of things.
“We’ve had some brilliant children helping us out too, they were fantastic and really enjoyed it. Hopefully we will be returning later in the year.”

The eighteenth annual Firth Park Fun Day is due to take place on June 26, which promises to a peaceful and diverse family event.

New gym equipment is being installed in the park too.

Sarah Hardy, of the Friends of Firth Park, said: “The area may have its problems, but there’s a lot going for Firth Park and it seems to be getting a bit of a kicking recently.

“I just want people to know that there is so much good work happening here and there are some really amazing people doing a lot of great things.

“I’ve lived here most of my life and it is a lovely little area.”

She added: “The fun day is put on by all our amazing local volunteers, who work so hard to make sure the event is free for local families.

“We’re making it as representative of the community as possible and we’ve got some lovely Roma dancers and Eureka science activities coming.
