THE Green Party stages its autumn conference in Sheffield this weekend.

More than 500 delegates are expected to attend events on Hallam University’s city centre campus from tomorrow (Friday).

The conference rotates around cities with Green councillors and will see leader Caroline Lucas giving the keynote speech tomorrow afternoon, after which she will chair a panel looking at the issue of tax dodging.

A walking tour by deputy leader Adrian Ramsay will focus on the Central ward, where the Greens have two councillors, and will include visits to Sheffield Renewables, the Regather Co-Op and a mosque.

Over the weekend, there will discussions about a countryside policy review designed to strength green belt legislation, including extending the green belt into cities, a response to the Government’s immigration cap and NHS reforms and the future of nuclear power post-Fukushima.

The conference, at Hallam’s Pennine Lecture Theatre, will offer local Greens the chance to raise their profile and follows the Liberal Democrats’ spring conference at the City Hall.

On this occasion, though, many of the delegates are expected to stay at the homes of local members instead of booking hotels.

The event is also another boost for civic leaders who want to raise the city’s reputation as a conference destination.
