The ongoing regeneration of Sheffield’s West Bar area takes another step forward today with the official opening of a new £9 million hotel.
The 142-room Hampton by Hilton complex opens in the former Central Division Police Headquarters.
The landmark 1965 building – which shut as a nick in 2011 – has undergone a massive 18-month makeover to transform it into what bosses hope will become one of the Sheffield’s busiest hotels.
The city’s growing reputation has a conference centre means there is an increasing demand for extra rooms.
Forty-two jobs have been created by the opening.
The seven-storey facility, in West Bar itself, includes meeting rooms, 24-hour gym and adjacent Marco Pierre White restaurant. WiFi is available throughout the building. Room prices vary but will start from £61 a night.
Peter Hendry, general manager, said: “It’s been a lot of hard work to transform the place which has gone right down to the last few days but now we’re just delighted to be opening and looking forward to a successful spring.
“Having moved to Sheffield to take this role, I’ve fallen in love with the place and I’m proud to now call it home. There’s a great buzz about the city and we can’t wait to be a part of it when we open our doors today.”
He added that, although there were only a handful of rooms booked for tonight, such a low-key opening was in line with Hilton policies.
He said: “You don’t want to be fully booked for your first few weeks because you’re still ironing out potential difficulties. But our bookings over the summer are already looking promising. We’re here to offer something new and fresh for the city centre.”
The restaurant – a New York Italian style diner – opens on March 24.
Coun Harry Harpham, deputy leader of Sheffield Council, welcomed the investment.
He said: “This is much welcome boost for the city centre. Sheffield’s reputation as a conference centre is growing all the time so more hotel beds in the city centre are needed.
“I’ve not seen the building yet but I understand it looks excellent.”
There is no official opening but doors open at 10am.
