Hundreds of joggers of all ages got together to raise money for charities close to their hearts at a 5k fun run.

Around 250 people were involved in the event at Rother Valley Country park on Sunday morning, with many in some unusual fancy dress costumes.

The annual event sees people raising money for charities of their choice, with their combined fundraising efforts making thousands of pounds for good causes in South Yorkshire and beyond.

The course took them around the site’s two lakes.

Some of the people taking part this year had very special reasons to be involved.

Jennifer Gee, aged 59, from Chesterfield, was running for Cancer Research in memory of her husband Brian, who recently died from the disease.

She was joined by her daughter Rachel Jones, 32, and her granddaughters Elouise, 10, and Lydia, who was celebrating her seventh birthday.

Rachel said the family had raised about £250 in sponsorship and it was the first time they had taken part in the fun run.
Also involved were mum Paula Bagnall, aged 47, and her daughter Bethan Thorneycroft, 21, who were at the event with Paula’s friend Helen Murray, 44, who lives near Buxton.

Paula and Bethan were running for Lupus UK as Bethan has the condition, which is mainly found in women and affects the immune system, causing damage in the joints, muscles and other organs.

Bethan said: “At the moment it is not so bad, but it can flare up.”

As runners arrived before the 11am start, they were greeted with heavy showers.

But by the time they set off, the worst of the weather had cleared.
Ian Holloway, from organiser GSI Events, said Rother Valley was an ‘excellent location’ for the 3-mile event.
