John Hopkins is back in the saddle as he approaches 75 - so Sheffield families can go on holiday.

The retired chartered accountant, who lives in Fulwood, sets off this month on the Yorkshire route of the Tour de France, aiming to pedal 245 miles over six days.

He chairs the Sheffield Family Holiday Fund, which helped over 800 children and adults to have a holiday last year. His aim is to raise £5,000 to match a sum donated by the Diana and Gerard Young Trust.

Already John has completed two marathon cycle rides, from Land’s End to John O’Groats in 2004, after which he wrote a book, and east to west across the UK in 2008, raising almost £21,000 for charities.

He knows the route, ending in Sheffield, is tough, but says: “I always cycle within myself.”
