Last chance to look inside brutalist Moore Street substation for Art Sheffield exhibition

There are just a couple of days left for people to have a look around one of Sheffield's most striking examples of modern architecture.

An exhibition based on atomic-level matter by Steve Claydon in the Moore Street electricity substation in Sheffield city centre will open for the final time tomorrow (Thursday, May 5).

Presented in the brutalist Grade II listed building, Claydon’s work Infra-idol Assembly explores the transmission of energy via mass and the material manifestation of force. In it, he samples footage from IBM’s stopframe animation A Boy and his Atom, featuring a stick figure composed of individual atoms.

The video is accompanied by audio samples of the atoms being moved, along with sporadic voices generated by early IBM computer poetry. This sequence is then mixed and amplified through a plate reverb unit specially designed and fabricated using steel from the city.

The substation building was opened to the public especially for the exhibition, which is part of Art Sheffield, and is unlikely to open again for some time. The exhibition is open daily from midday to 5pm.
