SHEFFIELD City Council is facing the threat of legal action over proposed cuts to early years services.

A client of Sheffield Law Centre has formally notified the authority she intends to take it to court on the basis that it allegedly failed to comply with consultation procedures, equality duties and Government guidance not to cut funding to the voluntary sector more than the council’s own services.

The council is looking to reorganise its early years services in a bid to save £3.5m.

But critics say the 20 centres facing cuts are mostly in deprived areas of the city where commercial childcare businesses are not viable.

Sally Pearse, of Tinsley Green Nursery, said, “The withdrawal of this funding will leave our working and training parents with no support and will leave young children with disabilities with no local provision. The cuts fall on the individuals and communities who need most support. We hope this legal action will make them look again at these unfair proposals.”

A protest was held in Sheffield city centre last Saturday.
