Lifetime achievement award for Sheffield professor
A professor at the University of Sheffield has been awarded a prestigious Pfizer Excellence in Oncology Award in recognition of his lifetime contribution to cancer research.
Professor Barry Hancock, from the University's School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, was presented with the Pfizer Lifetime Achievement Award. This award recognises one individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of oncology throughout their lifetime.
The Excellence in Oncology Awards 2008, organised by the British Oncological Association (BOA) and Pfizer, were held during the national NCRI Cancer Conference in Birmingham.
For the third year running, these awards aim to recognise and reward best practice in oncology management, education and patient care across the UK. Nicholas Owen, BBC News 24 presenter and survivor of kidney cancer, hosted the award ceremony at the Hyatt Hotel in Birmingham.
Professor Hancock qualified top of his year in Medicine at the University of Sheffield in 1969, with distinctions and prizes in twelve subjects. He trained for five years in General Medicine, before becoming lecturer in Medicine and Medical Oncology at the University in 1974. As his interest in Oncology developed, he was promoted to senior lecturer and then reader, and in 1988 was appointed to Sheffield's first Chair of Oncology.
He is currently Chairman of the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Renal Clinical Studies Group and President of the International Society for the Study of Trophoblastic Disease. He is also Director of Yorkshire Cancer Research (YCR) in Sheffield, and Professor of Oncology at the University. His major research areas are lymphoma, kidney cancer and a rare pregnancy related cancer, choriocarcinoma. He is the principal investigator for several studies of new treatment into these tumours.
Professor Hancock's achievements already include the New Years Honours Award for service to the community, the Local Community Hero Award for health and lifetime achievement from the Sheffield Star, and a Centenary Medal for outstanding achievement from the University of Sheffield.
Professor Barry Hancock said:
"The award ceremony was a humbling but very wonderful occasion. To be held in such high regard by my peers is really something special. In my acceptance speech I told the audience that my life has always been based on some advice given to me many years ago by a wise mentor - always think in 'p's - be 'positive', love 'people' and talk in 'pictures' - and that's been my 'philosophy' in life. I have been very fortunate to have a supportive family, particularly my wife Helen, to have worked with excellent colleagues and to have cared for wonderful patients - what more could a medical man want?"
Professor Tony Weetman, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Medicine, said:
"This award is richly deserved. Barry has made highly significant contributions to research on an array of different types of cancer. In addition, he has worked tirelessly to improve the quality of patient care locally and nationally, and at the same time has ensured that oncology training in Sheffield is first rate."
