A MURDER probe has been launched after a man died following a brawl in a South Yorkshire pub.

Police said the 45-year-old victim, from Dinnington, was involved in a fight in the Don John public house on High Street, Maltby, Rotherham, when he sustained a serious head injury and later died.

He was rushed to Rotherham District General but was unable to be saved and was pronounced dead a short time after arriving.

Police said trouble broke out at the pub at around 10pm and revealed a ‘number of people were involved in a fight’.

A 35-year-old Maltby man was arrested on suspicion of murder on the night of the disturbance and spent yesterday being questioned by detectives.

The pub was taped off and under police guard yesterday with an officer preventing members of the public from entering the crime scene.

Officers from South Yorkshire Police’s video unit were at the pub with forensic experts.

Residents in the mining town spoke of their shock at the killing.

Keith Stanley, aged 61, who lives close to the pub, said: “I didn’t hear sirens but saw all the blue flashing lights outside.

“The police never came knocking so when I woke up and saw the pub taped off the next day I realised something serious must have happened.

“I never saw or heard any trouble so it is a bit of a shock to find out that somebody has died.”

Derek Roberts 58, said: “I don’t drink so I don’t go to the pub but from what I know you don’t get riff-raff in there - it is normally a quiet pub, so I am really shocked about this.”

A 73-year-old woman, who lives close to the pub, said: “I came back from bingo at about 11pm and the police were everywhere, so all the trouble was over by then.

“It was all taped off outside.

“I feel sorry for the staff who would have been working that night - they are all lovely, it can’t have been nice for them to have seen this.

“I have heard the odd row at the pub, but nothing serious, just what you would get in any pub.”

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “South Yorkshire Police has launched a murder investigation after a 45-year-old Dinnington man died in an incident in the Don John Hotel public house, Maltby, at around 10pm on Sunday.

“It is believed a number of people were involved in a fight in which the victim sustained a serious head injury, he was taken to Rotherham District General Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.”

n Anyone in the Don John or any other pub in Maltby on the night of the fight should call South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 1,242 of October 14.

Crimestoppers can also be contacted on 0800 555111.
