Resident Marian Day sounded the last post as demolition of the Kelvin Flats began on March 10. 1995.

It was not exactly a salute to the flats off Infirmary Road at Upperthorpe, more a bugle blast of good riddance. “I saw these being built and I’ll see them coming down,” she said. “I will be glad when they are gone - they were nothing but a waste of money.”

Marian was one of hundreds of local residents standing by to watch the then housing minister Ann Widdicombe take the controls of a demolition team’s ball and crane. Built in 1967, the complex consisted of two 13 storey deck access blocks with four wide walks or “Streets in the Sky” containing 948 flats. But it was dogged by social problems although a strong community spirit existed and some residents said they would have been happy to remain.
