News In Brief: Charity is going green with cash for its garden

EMMAUS Sheffield is going green thanks to grant aid from the Sheffield Drug and Alcohol Action Team.

DAAT is providing £3,500 to the charity that provides a home, support, training and work for homeless men and women aged 18 and over.

The money will be spent on a new project aimed at increasing the community’s self-sufficiency.

Emmaus Sheffield gives former homeless people the chance to be part of a working community and help them become self-sufficient through social enterprise.

Manager Graham Bostock welcomed the cash boost and said it would be help them cultivate their own produce.

He said: “This will help launch our Learn to Grow project.

“It will provide sufficient funding for a concrete base and a greenhouse, with water recycling system, heating and lighting.

“Our aim is to grow our own produce for consumption within the community but hopefully we might create a surplus which could be sold through our shop.”

Jazz concert boosts charity

JAZZ enthusiasts are invited to Calver next month, in support of a Sheffield and Derbyshire-based charity that helps incurably ill people spend their final days in the comfort of their own home.

The Mart Rodger Manchester Jazz band will appear for the Rotary Club of Hope Valley’s ninth Charity Jazz Evening at Calver Village Hall on Saturday, October 13.

All profits will go to Helen’s Trust and other local charities.
