A STING by underage volunteers working for Trading Standards caught out pub boss Richard Lewis, aged 28, who sold two bottles of beer to a 15-year-old at The Wheatsheaf in Newbold village.

He told the court: “I asked him for ID. He said he hadn’t got it with him. I asked him if he was 18 and he said yes. They are not allowed to lie under test purchase guidelines. We are very strict now. If they haven’t got ID they don’t come in.”

Lewis, of Brimington Road, Chesterfield, received a six-month conditional discharge, with £85 costs, after admitting supplying alcohol to a person under 18.

A FARMER lost part of a crop of standing corn when a field was set alight on Stead Lane, Barnsley, Hoyland, at 4.10pm on Thursday.

A caravan was set alight in an arson attack in the car park at Highgate Greyhound Stadium on Nicholas Lane, Goldthorpe, Barnsley, at 8.20pm on Thursday.

And police are investigating the break-in of a car on Kenwood Park Road, Nether Edge, Sheffield, overnight last Monday.

Anyone with information about any of the crimes should call police on 101.

FIREFIGHTERS called to reports of a large blaze discovered it involved their old fire station.

Arsonists are thought to be responsible for the incident, which gutted the former Chesterfield Fire Station, on Sheffield Road, and took four hours to bring under control in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The site is being sold for redevelopment and the fire station has been relocated.

A VAN was severely damaged by fire on a Sheffield Street. Firefighters were called to the incident, on Manor Oaks Road, Manor, at 2am on Saturday.
