'˜Northern Poorhouse' claim in wake of job losses

The Northern Powerhouse has been dubbed the '˜Northern Poorhouse' by city trade unions in the wake of recent Sheffield job losses.

Responding to announcements of over 600 job losses at printer Polestar UK, 600 at HSBC, the threat to hundreds of steel jobs and the Government’s decision to close its BIS Office with 250 jobs, Martin Mayer, secretary of Sheffield TUC said it was ‘devastating news’.

He said: “So much for George Osborne’s Northern Powerhouse – it really is beginning to look like a Northern Poorhouse here in Sheffield.”

Martin said Sheffield TUC would be writing to MPs and the Government.
