PRIMARY SCHOOL 2009: Brunswick School win Environment Award - VIDEO

BRUNSWICK Primary School led the field as the winner of our Primary School Award at this year's Sheffield Telegraph Environment Awards 2009.

Brunswick is a community primary school at Woodhouse and has been involved in a wide range of environmental projects.

Almost 60 pupils from the school took part in hedge planting as part of a scheme to improve the area known as Brunswick Field.

The hedge planting is part of ongoing environmental improvements organised by the Sheffield Environmental Planning team and put into practice by the Sheffield Landscape Trust.

Site improvements include footbridge repair, fencing, path surfacing, scrub clearance, wildflower planting and seed sowing to create a skylark meadow. The contribution of the Brunswick pupils made a big difference to the scheme and their efforts were warmly welcomed by organisers.

Brunswick holds the Silver Eco-Schools Award and Healthy Schools status and is now putting further steps in place to go for the Green Flag award during this school year.

It has its own science garden and every child in the school is involved with planting, tending and harvesting fruit and vegetables from the garden, some of which are used in school.

The school recycles all its ink cartridges and has also arranged to take part in bulb planting in the local community.

Finalist - Wisewood Primary School:

Wisewood Primary has seen some significant changes over the last few years when it comes to the environment.

The school has built a sensory garden in conjunction with Pennine Housing and members of the local community, giving the children a quiet place to sit and read at lunch and playtimes and also providing a secure area for pupils to leave their bikes. This, in turn, allows the children to ride to school rather than travel by car.

The inner quadrangle at Wisewood has been transformed into a gardening area. Each class has a raised garden and at the end of the year there is an award for the best garden area. Six chickens are also kept here, cared for by the caretaker, and egg collecting is used as a reward throughout the school.

The school is currently having a wildlife garden built, funded by Yorkshire Water, supported by Black & Veatch and designed by the children themselves. It will feature a pond, bird house, hedgehog house and bird feeders.
