INVESTIGATIONS have been launched into sickening abuse made former Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp over the heartbreaking death of his baby son.

Police and officials at his former club Doncaster Rovers are trying to trace an individual calling himself Chris Boyd, who made comments on the social media site Twitter. The account has since been deleted and Rovers say the ‘tweeter’ is not on their ticketing database or a season ticket holder. It is suspected he may be a juvenile.

It is not the first time 26-year-old Sharp, who was sold by Rovers to Southampton for £1.8m in January, has suffered abuse from cyberspace about the death of his two-day-old child.

The footballer and his girlfriend Jade were hit by tragedy last October when their son, Luey Jacob, died through complications caused by gastroschisis - a hernia type birth defect. The grieving dad turned out to play soon after the tragedy and dedicated a stunning goal to Luey at the Keepmoat Stadium against Middlesbrough, revealing a T-shirt with the message ‘That’s for you son’.

Doncaster Rovers have launched an investigation, and vowed to take ‘appropriate action’ if the person can be traced, saying: “The club will not tolerate the misuse of social media.”
