SHEFFIELD is preparing to celebrate the arrival of the Chinese Year of the Snake.

A dragon and lion dance will be held in front of the town hall on Saturday at noon, to be launched by the Lord Mayor, Coun John Campbell, who will paint the dragon’s eyes.

The Lord Mayor will also be at the Sheffield Chinese School celebrations at King Edward VII Lower School in Darwin Lane, Crosspool, on Sunday afternoon.

Members of the city’s Chinese community will give performances of song, dance and other traditions at the City Hall on Monday, with an invitation to the public to join the celebrations. The main show starts at 7pm and includes acrobats, martial arts, a tea art show and the Sichuan Opera. In the ballroom there will be traditional singing, drumming and dancing, and food will be served from 5pm.

A representative of the Chinese Embassy will be at the City Hall. Tickets cost £6 in advance, £7 on the door (plus concessions).

According to Chinese mythology, the Year of the Snake is predicted to be a year of prosperity and peace. As the sixth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, the snake represents wisdom, beauty, intelligence and power.
