Scrap dealers’ last journey ... On a skip lorry
Funeral of Mr Fieldhouse who was a scrap dealer. His coffin was taken to Grenoside Crematorium on the back of a skip lorry
A RETIRED scrap dealer who saw himself as a ‘young Steptoe’ was granted his last wish - to be carried to his funeral on a skip lorry.
Donald Fieldhouse, aged 85, who used to run Fieldhouse Brothers at Neepsend, wanted a ‘traditional scrap man’s funeral’ with the coffin on a skip lorry or a cart pulled by a horse.
Mr Fieldhouse, who lived in Walkley, but most recently at Rose Cottage nursing home, Mosborough, died last month, 10 days after his wife Elizabeth and the day after her funeral.
Arthur’s Skips, based at Fieldhouse Brothers’ former Isaac Works site, provided a new skip lorry for the occasion, which was modified with bolts to secure the coffin. Mr Fieldhouse’s straw boater hat was placed on top.
The procession went from John Fairest funeral home in Wadsley Bridge to Grenoside Crematorium.
Mr Fieldhouse had been a scrap man from the age of 14, working for his grandfather, Isaac. Son Darren Fieldhouse, aged 44, said: “My dad said it was like Steptoe and Son, with my grandad being old Steptoe and him as young Steptoe.”
The firm carried on until 1985. James Hartley, of Arthur’s Skips, which offered its services free of charge, said: “Everything worked out as planned.”
