Sheffield boxer back in the ring for charity

A Sheffield Thai boxer is stepping back into the ring 14 years after his last fight to raise money for a cancer charity.

Mark Poole, aged 39, of Raeburn Road, Gleadless, has been training extensively for nine weeks to prepare for a fight to raise cash for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

The boxer is set to fight on May 11 at Wicker Camp, the Sheffield Thai Boxing Gym, on Effingham Street, Attercliffe, after his aunt died of cancer.

Thai boxing allows contestants to use kicks and elbows as well as punches.

Mark said: “People would often ask me if I’d ever fight again and I always said I would but only for charity.

“So here I go, after 14 years after my last fight with Andy Howson,

“I’m going for it and my chosen charity is Weston Park Cancer Charity in memory of my Aunt Jean and a few others who I know that are having treatment right now.

“I’m sure most people out there have been, or know someone who has been, affected by cancer. So me fighting is for them as well.”
