Sheffield bus queue driver jailed
A YOUNG motorist who fled the scene after ploughing into a Sheffield bus stop – injuring eight passengers in the queue – has been jailed for four months and banned from driving.
District judge Tony Browne told centre manager Adil Riaz, aged 23, that the matter was so serious he had to lock him up immediately.
Judge Browne said: “Every person in these circumstances has a moral and legal imperative to stay, render assistance, summon help for those who might need it and remain at the scene until the emergency services arrive.
“Your response was completely the reverse.”
Riaz lost control of the silver BMW 3 series he’d bought the day before, and smashed into the bus stop outside the Northern General Hospital on Barnsley Road at 8.05pm on July 2.
The most severe injuries were suffered by cleaner Ewa Koncka, aged 23 at the time, who had just finished her shift at the Northern General Hospital. She almost had to have her foot amputated, and still suffers from nightmares, undergoing therapy.
She has been so devastated by her life-changing injuries she contemplated suicide, the court was told.
Thomas Milner, a trainee nurse on placement at the hospital, suffered a broken arm, ribs and spine.
He has had panic attacks and nightmares and has fallen behind on his course, the court heard.
After the crash Riaz, of Whiteways Road, Grimesthorpe, and the other occupants of the car fled on foot.
About 20 minutes later Riaz rang the police – and claimed he’d been beaten unconscious and that he had had his car stolen.
Surat Alam, defending at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court, said Riaz panicked because he thought he was going to be attacked by the angry bus passengers.
She said: “He panicked, he became fearful, and he goes on to make up a story – an act of stupidity on his part. He wishes to apologise in person to all the victims.”
Miss Alam added Riaz, who pleaded guilty to failing to stop after causing injury, failing to report an accident, driving without due care and attention, and having no insurance, had been thrown out of his family home and shunned by his community.
He was banned from driving for 18 months.
