They seek him here, they seek him there – those angry residents seek him everywhere.
A Sheffield councillor has been dubbed the Scarlet Pimpernel by a community fed up with botched repair work.
Residents of Waterthorpe have nicknamed Coun Jack Scott, cabinet member for environment and Street Scene, after the elusive literary hero Sir Percy Blakeney for repeated failures to visit the area to see first hand problems with footpaths and potholes.
Campaigners have been calling for action since May last year, when council contractors Amey were called out to carry out urgent repair work. Local people claim they did a ‘shabby’ job.
Gail Smith, of Thorpe Drive, Waterthorpe, said: “Amey left it in a worse condition than it was before.
“It is a complete and utter waste of taxpayers’ money.
“Coun Scott promised he would come down and have a look and see the problems and the conditions of the footpaths. Tenants and residents have been writing letters to Coun Scott ever since to see when he is coming out to Waterthorpe to have a look for himself.
“They have nicknamed him the Scarlet Pimpernel.”
Coun Scott said: “This was a quick repair and not part of wider improvement work.
“ I am more than happy to visit if work is not up to scratch and I will make it a priority.
“It was not core investment work that was done.”
