Max Newton, aged 43, from Woodseats, is hoping to run the equivalent of just under eight marathons in two and a half days as part of the ‘Endurothon’ event in Hampshire, starting on June 3 and finishing on June 6.

Participants must complete 100 miles in the first 24 hours to be able to continue the challenge, and there is a 60 hour time limit for the full 200.

Max has previously completed the Great North Run half marathon, the London Marathon, a London-to-Brighton 56 mile race in 2011, and the 100 mile ‘Grim Reaper Ultramarathon’ a couple of years ago.

However, the experienced runner accepts this new challenge is a huge step up.

He said: “Once you’ve done a marathon everyone knows you can do it, so I had to find something longer.

“Once I’d done 56 miles the same. Again once I’d ran 100 miles in one go. I need to keep going longer in order to keep the jeopardy – the question: will he do it? And so, I find myself about to run 200 miles!”

He credits the city’s famous hills as one reason why he’s able to run so far. He can often be seen striding up the fearsome Cobnar Road in Woodseats and through Graves Park as part of his long training runs.

He said: “Sheffield has some stunning views, vast steep hills and great nature that make for pleasant and motivating training runs.”

Max works as a senior community fundraiser for the Red Cross in Sheffield and through his latest challenge he is hoping to raise £2, 500 for the humanitarian charity.

He said: “All money raised helps people affected by crises such as extreme weather, house fires, floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, famine and war.”
