Sheffield Legends: Walk Of Fame.

POP bands, writers, doctors, politicians, sports stars, fundraisers and businessmen are among the famous names nominated to be the next Sheffield Legend.

A diverse range of city celebrities have been put forward for the honour by residents who have nominated those they deem worthy of a star-shaped plaque outside the Town Hall.

The idea is based on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

Megan Coakley, of Marketing Sheffield, said: “We will be going through the list to see which nominees meet the criteria and then a shortlist will be drawn up and that goes to the Town Hall.

“A panel of people will whittle it down to around 10 names and the final decision will be taken later this year by the Lord Mayor.”

Brendan Moffet, director of Marketing Sheffield, said: “We are delighted with the response and have received hundreds of nominations.

“The criteria is people who have done something of national or international significance and have put Sheffield on the map.”

The decision is expected to be made in March, with the ceremony taking place in April.

Current legends are Sean Bean, Gordon Banks, Def Leppard, Joe Simpson, Michael Palin, Helen Sharman, Naseem Hamed, Joe Cocker, Seb Coe, Jarvis Cocker, Brendan Ingle, David Mellor, Joe Scarborough, Michael Vaughan, Clinton Woods, Professor Barry Hancock, Jessica Ennis and Dame Margaret Drabble.

Nominees this year are:

Local historian and writer Neil Anderson; charity fundraiser – man with the pram – John Burkhill; Wimbledon doubles champion Jonny Marray; musicians Paul Carrack and Richard Hawley; ex-tennis player Roger Taylor who was a former Davis Cup Captain; artist Pete McKee; Toby Foster, comedian, television star and radio presenter; actor Dominic West; squash player Nick Matthew; actress and singer Marti Caine; boxer Herol ‘Bomber’ Graham; singer Dave Berry; Arctic Monkeys; comedy actor and musician Graham Fellows; and author Martyn Johnson.

Also included are Sir Ron Ironmonger, former leader of Sheffield Council; Jessica Ennis’ coach Tony Minichiello; The Human League; former footballer Terry Curran; entrepreneur Peter Stringfellow; Olympic cyclist Malcolm Elliott; former football referee Uriah Rennie; Phil Oakey, lead singer of Human League; world champion Thai boxer Nick Mullaney; world champion mountain biker Steve Peat; former MP and Labour deputy leader Roy Hattersley; radio presenter Rony Robinson; Professor David Sanders, consultant gastroenterologist from the Hallamshire Hospital; Daniel Evans, artistic director at Sheffield Theatres; Chris Stoddard, consultant gastrointestinal surgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals; Hillsborough and Brightside MP David Blunkett; and soldier corporal Liam Riley who lost his life in Afghanistan in 2010.
