Sheffield park launches hunt for new artwork

Artists and craftsmen and women have the chance to win a £2,000 commission to create a piece of artwork for a Sheffield park.

The Nether Edge Neighbourhood Group is inviting applications for a new piece to go in Chelsea Park.

The work is expected to be substantially of timber or sandstone construction as the intention is to keep to natural materials within the park, but alternatives are not ruled out.

However, it must be robust and securely fixed.

Christine Venables, group chairman, said: “Our children’s play area and the Brincliffe Edge Road entrance have bespoke artist fencing based on natural themes and the youth shelter was also an artist commission, which appears as a giant leaf. The challenge now is to develop a new feature because our popular wooden owl sculpture has slowly degraded over time.”

Proposals should be submitted by Friday, July 18. For details, visit www.netheredge.org.uk
