Radu Rosta jailed for 12 years for rape

A rapist who was ‘on the prowl’ for a victim attacked a 16-year-old babysitter as she made her way home in Sheffield.

Radu Rostas, aged 27, was jailed for 12 years after he was convicted of raping the student in a secluded grassy spot near the city centre after a four-day trial.

Ian Goldsack, prosecuting at Sheffield Crown Court, said Rostas followed the girl as she got off a bus near Park Square roundabout.

She had been babysitting for family friends in Woodseats before the attack happened in the early hours last October 20.

Rostas attacked her from behind and threatened to kill her, before demanding she perform a sex act on him.

The brave teenager tried to flee but fell and Romanian national Rostas dragged her then raped her on secluded land off Broad Road, Wybourn.

Mr Goldsack said the girl managed to call her mother and alert police and Rostas was arrested.

He said the teenager had been unable to sleep since the attack and her studies had suffered.

She was too scared to go out of the house alone and felt scared and unsafe in male company.

Rostas had claimed the girl agreed to have sex with him after he told her she was beautiful.

He said he had been on his way home to St Anne’s Road, Eastwood, Rotherham, after a night at Napoleon’s Casino in Owlerton when they met.

But jurors rejected his claims and, sentencing, Judge Paul Watson QC, said he had gone to Hillsborough and West Street in search of a victim.

He told Rostas: “You were on the prowl. I have no hesitation in concluding you are a significant risk of serious harm to the public.

“You accosted her, you made threats to kill her and you went on to rape her.

“She was a barely more than a child. You plainly believe you have the right to have sex with any girl who has the misfortune to encounter you.”

Rostas was told once released he would be on an extended licence of three years.
