Sheffield remembers the Holocaust
A VIGIL was held in the Winter Garden in Sheffield city centre on Monday to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
It was an opportunity to remember the victims of the Holocaust, other Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur - and to learn the lessons of history.
This year’s theme was Communities Together: Build a Bridge, encouraging groups and individuals to consider how neighbours have turned on each other, with the challenge of creating stronger and more tolerant communities.
The Sheffield vigil was the day after Holocaust Memorial Day, which is January 27, and this year commemorates the 68th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Nazi concentration and extermination camp.
A collection of posters is being displayed in the Winter Garden until Sunday, and visitors can write down your thoughts.
Heeley MP Meg Munn was among politicians marking the memorial day by signing a Book of Commitment in the Commons.
