Burglars have struck at addresses across south Sheffield.

They have targeted homes in Abbey Lane, Beauchief; Ballifield Crescent, Handsworth; Plowright Mount, Gleadless Valley, Woodseats Road in Woodseats and at Meadowhead.

Residents living in those areas have been warned about the break-ins by a new service which has been launched by Sheffield Neighbourhood Watch. The organisation is trying to capture a new and younger generation of supporters and is using social media to help tackle crime.

They are using Twitter to warn residents when burglars have struck in their areas.

Neighbourhood Watch is being relaunched in the city in an event at Sheffield Hallam University.

It will take place on Wednesday, August 27, in the Adsetts Lecture Theatre – and organisers want those interested in helping to make their communities safer to come along.

Wendy Zealand, chairman, said: “We want users of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other social media apps to help us all feel safer and join our network. These tools can be useful and efficient in the fight against crime against a backdrop of cuts to policing numbers and rising incidences of household burglary and car crime.”

“What could be simpler than keeping in touch via social media and harnessing the power of networking from our phones, tablets and laptops.”

Those going along are asked to take their Smartphones, and keynote speakers will discuss use of social media to tackle crime.
