Sheffield will host the ‘best-ever’ Special Olympics, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has said.

The Sheffield Hallam MP said he was ‘proud’ the city has been chosen to host the British summer games in three years time.

He said: “It shows we continue to be a major city of sport.

“I’m certain the world-class facilities, outstanding hospitality and all-round love of sport will ensure we put on the best-ever Special Olympics Summer Games.

“People with intellectual disabilities often have to face barriers in their daily lives because of unfair stereotypes or misconceptions.

“The Special Olympics are so exceptional, because they are helping to change attitudes for the better and show how the power of sport can provide opportunities for us all.

“Apart from being able to enjoy this major sporting spectacle, I’m confident everyone who gets involved will be inspired by some of the stories and successes of the athletes taking part.”

Richard McGloin, Sheffield Hallam University’s assistant director of facilities, said the games would be the biggest event yet at the university’s athletics facility on Woodbourn Road. He said: “It gives us a chance to show the facility off.”
