Sheffield woman who takes 50 pills a day helps raise money for medical centre

Gemma Louise Kelly hopes that raising awareness of the Sheffield Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre will help raise money for the Sheffield Hospitals Charity to fund its work.

The only one of its kind in South Yorkshire, the centre uses cutting-edge technology allowing essential treatment and medical procedures to be provided by staff, while giving a comfortable home-from-home atmosphere.

Gemma Louise Kelly, a regular user of the centre at the Northern General Hospital, is urging people to buy tickets for a ball to raise cash to pay for treatment and research into cystic fibrosis - where mucus in the lungs causes breathing difficulties and can lead to regular chest infections.

The condition also affects the body’s ability to digest food and absorb nutrients.

The charity ball is to be held at Baldwin’s Omega, Sheffield, on Friday, May 20.

Gemma, aged 30, said: “The cystic fibrosis centre is amazing. We have a team of staff specialised in treating cystic fibrosis. Everyone from the cleaners, to the nurses, to the doctors, physios, dieticians, psychologists, pharmacists, are part of a team that makes our unit special.

“The cystic fibrosis ward is comfortable and is like a second home which is what I need when I stay there several times a year. Due to the nature of the ward, I know what I’m expecting when I come into hospital and I know I’m going to get the very best care from people who hold an interest in my condition.
