Young Sheffield cyclist Tom Scott has made the podium at the British Schools National Championships. The nine-year-old Athelstan Primary School pupil, from Handsworth, finished third in a cyclo cross race at Redditch, Worcestershire. Sharon Scott, his mum, said: “The previously muddy course had dried out and so the course was extended to include a wooded section. Tom took the lead and maintained it for a lap and a half before he was overtaken. In the glorious sunshine, riders from as far afield as Jersey and Newcastle competed in what was a great day’s racing for children aged six to 16.”

Cyclo cross is described as cross country for bikes and often involves racing in conditions such as wet and muddy tracks or woodlands paths full of obstacles.
