A PORTRAIT of her mother by Silverdale A level student Ariana Chetty has gone on show in London.

She was one of just 20 artists from around the country selected as a National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies Scholar to have their work displayed alongside professional artists at the Annual Exhibition Preview of the Royal Society of British Artists.

The oil on canvas portrait had been submitted by the Sheffield Young Artists organisation. An increase in Sheffield entries for this national award – 49 compared with 13 last year – followed the success of another Silverdale student, Yetka Saidi, whose portrait of her grandmother was shown at the 2012 RBA preview.

For the first time this year a selection of the national winning A Level artworks is also being displayed at John Lewis on Oxford Street, including Ariana’s painting which will also be shown in the restaurant of the department store’s Sheffield branch in April.

Before the awards presentation RBA president James Horton applauded the work of the Sheffield Young Artists, organised by the Rotary Group of Abbeydale, and the many volunteers who make possible the programme providing support for young artists in the city.

This year’s all ages Sheffield Young Artists Exhibition will be held on May 3-4 at Ponds Forge.
