Soldiers from South Yorkshire are on standby to join in Britain’s fight against Islamic State extremists in Iraq.
Defence secretary Michael Fallon has revealed soldiers from the 2 Yorks Battalion were deployed at an airfield in Erbil in Iraq ahead of a planned evacuation.
He said they were there to prepare the way for Chinooks to help with an evacuation, which did not prove necessary in the end.
The soldiers were later flown back to Cyprus but Mr Fallon said they are ready to be redeployed back to Iraq if they are needed.
He added the situation in Iraq is ‘very fast moving’.
The 2 Yorks Battalion recruits from across Yorkshire, and serves as light role infantry, based at Episkopi in Cyprus.
