South Yorkshire firefighters to strike tonight

Firefighters in South Yorkshire are due to walk out on strike tonight in an ongoing dispute over pensions.

They staged a walk-out between 6pm and 10pm last night, and are due to repeat the strike action again tonight.

The strike is over changes to pensions and retirement age.

Matt Wrack, General Secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, said: “It’s now been almost two months since the Government has been willing to meet us for negotiations, despite several invitations from us.

“Until they do, and until they start to actually resolve the dispute, we’ll keep up the pressure for the sake of public safety and our members’ pensions.”
