Stagecoach chief targets further growth
p4 lead Brian Souter, chief executive of Stagecoach, at launch of new services in Sheffield, 02/11/10
TRANSPORT chief Brian Souter visited Sheffield to launch a series of new bus services which have grown his company’s network in the city by 30 per cent – and revealed more improvements could be on the way.
The Stagecoach chief executive said his company has invested £4 million in a fleet of double decker buses to run its expanded number of routes, which now include cross-city services between Ecclesfield and Jordanthorpe via Hillsborough, and High Green and Greenhill, plus a second Supertram Link feeder service from Malin Bridge to Stannington.
Mr Souter revealed a further £6 million of investment is planned in the next few years in additional buses, including hybrid vehicles which run not only on diesel but on electricity converted from energy released during braking.
He said: “Sheffield’s a very interesting market. During the time we have been operating we have doubled patronage and improved the quality of services in Sheffield.”
Responding to criticism that Stagecoach has been running to the busiest areas only, and at the most profitable times of day, he said: “We entered the market as a secondary carrier but, as our market share has grown, we have been able to do more with our network. We are already running later buses.”
Mr Souter revealed further improvements, in addition to the new vehicles, could include buses
running into the early hours on some routes.
“It works in smaller cities, such as Oxford, so there’s no reason why it couldn’t here,” he said.
